There is something about them that makes us love them more and more, but what is it? Let’s check the fun and funny facts about Frenchies you might not have known.
1. Big Bat Ears Equals Selective Hearing
French Bulldogs have big and wide ears; you can literally see the inside very easily if your dog lets you. To be honest, the first sign of how to recognize a Frenchie are those bat ears, but here’s the thing: they can hear only things they want to hear. For example, if you try to let your dog know what they should not do, they will just not hear you. You can repeat one command five times; they will not move. They will not do anything but ignore you. Why? Selective hearing! So simple.

2. French Bulldogs Cartoon Eyes That Can Melt Your Heart
You know how we people always say that one look into someone’s eyes can change you? The way we look at someone so deeply and what we can find in the eyes means a lot to us. Same goes for dogs, but when you look a French Bulldog into their eyes, you are so done. Trust me, I know! No matter the age they are, no matter the mood, day or night, when you look into a Frenchie’s eyes you can see love that can melt you from head to toe.
But wait, there’s more. If you take a deep, deep look, you can also see judgment, jealousy, worry, and sadness.
Let me explain each, because it is probably not what you think.
- Judgment – Frenchies will act like an adult human being with this look in their eyes. How? Well, they will literally look you from head to toe, and you can read on their adorable face what that look means. It normally means something like: Really? This is what you’re wearing? That’s nasty… The point is, they can judge you so much that you will need to rethink some of your choices.
- Jealousy – What do you mean you petted another dog on the street on your way to the store? What do you mean you said the cat is cute? What do you mean you will kiss and hug someone else besides me? No way, José! That is the jelly-jelly look of our beloved Frenchies.
- Worry – For Frenchies, this means they are worried if they are not given their food at the time they’re used to. They will give you the worry look if you try to go out without them. They will also have that worried expression if they don’t understand what you are saying. Let me rephrase this a bit:
“Ozzy, mama has to go to the store. I will be back in less than 15 minutes. And no, baby, you can’t come with me because they will not let you inside. I didn’t make the rules, so please be a good boy and I will be back as soon as possible.”
What does that sentence make our Frenchie do? He gets the most worried expression on his face and probably wonders if you will ever come back. And when you do—other than joy—he shows a bit of fury, like he wants to say: You left me and never came back, and now I am taking your shoe so you won’t be able to go outside ever again, and now give me all the kisses. Mooooom!!! - Sadness – The worst look when it comes to French Bulldogs. Imagine this situation and all will be clear to you. You just fed your dog. That was enough for their meal. Now you deserve to eat, right? Probably in peace and quiet? No! You are so wrong! How can you eat when your Frenchie is looking so deeply into your eyes with those big, brown, sad eyes? It’s so sad it makes you want to cry. You may wonder if the Frenchie will cry if you don’t give them a bite. They already had their meal, but maybe just one bite? If you do that, it will make them happy for a second—and then they will want more. So be careful with that sad puppy face of theirs. It is a trap!
3. The Nose a.k.a. the Snorting Machine
Some people say Frenchies look like they were hit on their face so it’s squished; others say Frenchies do not even have a nose. Please let those rumors stop! Due to their specific look, they are adorable and we love them even though they have breathing issues sometimes. It is hard for them, so please understand.
And one more thing you need to understand is the snorting. I mean, what is the problem anyway—people snort too, right? Yes! But Frenchies can snort as loud as a tractor and can wake you up in the middle of the night with that sound. Remember, whenever they are in deep sleep—and they can sleep up to 12 hours—they snort louder and louder. That is a little reminder that you are not alone and will never be alone if you have this dog breed.
4. The King of the Drool
Our number four brings us to drooling. All dogs drool, but have you seen Frenchies? They truly are the kings of drooling. If it is cold outside and you are taking your doggie for a walk, please don’t be scared—it is funny and you will get used to it eventually—but they will have white, slimy drool all over their face, and what is even funnier is that they do not care!
If it’s not across the face, it’s on both sides of their mouth, getting bigger and bigger, but it just will not drop. Because of that, they can look silly or frightening to some people. Do not worry—just beg your Frenchie to clean their face when you get home and all will be fine… as long as they let you. This can also happen if you are chewing something in front of them. They will stare at the food, not at you, and start drooling—sometimes even making a bubble.
5. French Bulldogs Tiny Tail Hides a Bio Hazard Hole
Please do not say it and do not even think that this is something gross, because everyone does it—but truth be told, it really is hazardous a bit. Frenchies cannot control it, and why should they? Also, they are not shy about it, and why would they be, right?
Their tiny tail hides the biohazard hole, or farting fan if you will. It is deadly to those who haven’t gotten used to it. It can surprise you at any time. It can be loud or silent, and you cannot decide which one is worse. The thing about their farts is that no matter when it happens, or whether it is near or far from you—believe me—it will get to your nose eventually. If you asked Frenchies about it, they would probably just smile and go to sleep.
6. Fashionable Toy Dogs
Some of you may have heard somewhere that Frenchies are more like dog toys or that only rich people can afford to have them. Maybe you have heard that they are not protectors and are scared of everything. Well, due to their small-to-medium size, Frenchies are somewhat considered toy dogs, show dogs, fashionable dogs—dogs who only deserve and know luxury and quality.
Don’t let that fool you, though. Of course, they love their place clean and neat, and yes, they will let you put clothes on them for picture time—even for walks—but they are tough. They will protect their home and their owners from the doorbell and knocking. They will bark if they hear footsteps approaching the door of the flat. They will even be brave enough to pick on a German Shepherd.
But there are times when you absolutely must protect your Frenchie from firecrackers and fireworks noise with a hug. Or if they get scared of their own bowl of water, you need to let them know all will be fine and kiss them on the forehead.
7. The Famous French Bulldogs Zoomies
It is madness! I cannot emphasize this enough, but zoomies are the cutest trait of French Bulldogs—even though they look uncontrollably crazy. When zoomies occur (and trust me, it can happen at any given moment), your Frenchie will be unrecognizable. The eyes will look fierce, ears will be pointed and lowered. They will bark loudly and run so fast that it is possible for them to move furniture. No jokes!
If you try to stop them, you will just irritate them. If you let them do their thing, your neighbors will hate you—but they already hate you, so let your dog do its thing. Oh, and I hope you are not attached to your couch or pillows, because Frenchies are not. They might scratch, chew, or simply ruin them in the only way they know—for fun, of course.
Do not worry, there is nothing you can do to prevent zoomies, so just get used to it and enjoy!
8. It Is a Dog… No, It Is a Cat… Bat, Pig, Bunny… No, It Is a French Bulldog
The mix of a dog, a cat, a bat, a pig, and a bunny is the perfect description of a French Bulldog. Of course, they are dogs—they bark, look like a dog, and act like a dog—but they have qualities from other animals as well.
For instance, they can be very similar to a cat. If you want to pet a Frenchie, hug them, or rub their belly and they act weird and prefer to stay away from you, it pretty much reminds you of a cat. Due to their loud snorting and deadly farts, they are called pigs. Have you ever tried to move a Frenchie’s ears? They move like a bat flies—therefore the name bat. And as for the bunny… take them out for a walk and you will see how fast they can run and even hop-hop. Do not joke with Frenchies—they have it all!
9. Frenchies Are Babies
French Bulldogs love attention. All eyes on them, all day, every day. They love to be petted, have their bellies rubbed, and their heads massaged. They are happy to have all your love reserved just for them. They won’t mind if three people are petting them at the same time.
They are spoiled little babies who enjoy the best moments in life: food, attention, and more food. But seriously, they are clingy and crave attention. Do not dare leave your Frenchie alone for hours, and if you are next to them—just pet them as long as they let you. They will melt out of love for you.
Some really badly spoiled Frenchies, like one we know, will enjoy “the dance,” meaning you hold them like you are hugging and then gently sway left and right as if you are dancing. Also, what do babies fall asleep to? Rocking, right? Do that with a Frenchie in your lap and it will spoil them even more and make them smile from ear to ear.
10. High-Pitched Voice for Attention
Last but not least on our list is a real-deal fact about Frenchies. Since they act like babies, are spoiled, and want all the attention to themselves, if you talk to them as equals but in a high-pitched tone of voice, they are more likely to listen to you.
For instance, try asking your Frenchie if they would like to go for a walk or who is about to come to your place, and see how they react—but remember, use a high-pitched tone like you are talking to a baby. They will understand you and show you that they do. Just observe and enjoy each other’s company.
